Oklahoma lawmakers give district attorneys $500K for Tulsa, Muscogee Nation jurisdiction fight
The Oklahoma state government is allocating $500,000 to aid Tulsa’s district attorney in a jurisdictional fight with Muscogee Nation. The Oklahoma legislature's Joint Committee on State-Tribal Relations voted 6-1 to allocate funds to Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler's case, which questions whether the state can try non-Muscogee tribal citizens within the reservation for minor crimes. Last year, a federal judge ruled that Tulsa County officials could exercise concurrent criminal jurisdiction over tribal citizens. The Muscogee Nation argued this could threaten tribal sovereignty and their ability to try non’member Indigenous people. The money was allocated from the $9 million fund created by Gov. Kevin Stitt to address legal disputes between the state and tribal governments.
