'Shakespeare' at Philbrook, Tedeschi Trucks Band among biggest events this week

See a pop-up Shakespeare performance and movie on the lawn at Philbrook Museum, watch Tedeschi Trucks Band perform, celebrate Strawberry Shortcake Day and more. The Tulsa Shakespeare Club is hosting a pop-up performance at the Philbrook Museum of Art, as part of the Museum's Films on the Lawn Series. Performers will present four scenes from Shakespeare that showcase the Bard's most spectacular verbal fireworks. The film "10 Things I Hate About You" is an adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew, set in a contemporary high school. The Tedeschi Trucks Band will perform at the Tulsa Theater, featuring Joe Purdy as special guest. The world premiere of "HESAYECV," a feature-length film that tells the story of Jesus Christ in the Mvskoke language, will take place on June 15 at the College of the Muscogee Nation. Strawberry Shortcake Day is celebrated annually in honor of a Tulsa resident.

The Tulsa Shakespeare Club will be putting on a special pop-up performance prior to the showing of the film "10 Things I Hate About You," as part of the Philbrook Museum of Art's Films on the Lawn Series, Friday, June 14, at the museum, 2727 S. Rockford Road.

Performers Ashe Baileigh, Knox Blakely, Rachel Brown and Thomas Hunt will present four scenes from Shakespeare's work that demonstrate the Bard's most spectacular verbal fireworks.

"10 Things I Hate About You," which stars Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, is an adaptation of "The Taming of the Shrew," set in a contemporary high school.

Gates open at 6 p.m., with the film starting around 8:45 p.m. Tickets start at $15 for adults, and pre-registration is encouraged. philbrook.org .

Strawberry Shortcake Day is celebrated annually in honor of a Tulsa resident.

Artist Muriel Fahrion, who created Strawberry Shortcake, the Care Bears and the Get Along Gang, will be the guest of honor from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Ida Red, 3336 S. Peoria Ave.

Admission is free. Photos with Fahrion are $10, and she will sign as many as three pieces of memorabilia or merchandise for $10.

Blues singer Susan Tedeschi and slide guitarist extraordinaire Derek Trucks bring their "Deuces Wild" tour to Tulsa Theater, 105 W. Reconciliation Way.

The concert, 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, will feature Joe Purdy as special guest.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band has won the Band of the Year award from the Blues Music Awards five times and earned a Grammy Award for its debut album, "Revelator," in 2012.

A red carpet world premiere of “HESAYECV (The Savior),” a groundbreaking feature-length film that tells the story of Jesus Christ in the Mvskoke language, will take place 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in the newly constructed CMN Lecture Hall at the College of the Muscogee Nation, 2170 Raven Circle in Okmulgee. “HESAYECV” debuts as the first feature-length movie dubbed in the Mvskoke language. The production team is hopeful the film will aid and encourage the learning of the language and revitalization efforts.

The film features a cast of Muscogee Nation and Seminole Nation citizens who are native Mvskoke speakers, fluent speakers and second-language learners.

“HESAYECV” originated in 2018, when the Rev. Bill Barnett contacted the filmmakers of “The Savior” (who had already translated the film into 42 other languages) and expressed his desire to have a movie about Jesus in his native language. Barnett then assembled a group of native speakers to translate the film script into Mvskoke, including Mary Ann Emarthle, Jackson Barnett, Harris Cully and Lillian Thomas.

Semi-formal or Native attire is suggested for the event.

Arrive early and see Hornsby, the Tulsa Drillers’ mascot, in the lobby starting at 6:30 p.m. The film begins at 7 p.m. The Drillers play a home game at 1 p.m. on the same date. It’s a “Funday Sunday” game, so kids eat free.

The events of James Joyce's landmark novel "Ulysses" take place on June 16, 1904, and fans of the novel have been celebrating this day as "Bloomsday" (named for the novel's main character) ever since.

The Oklahoma Center for the Humanities at the University of Tulsa is partnering with Magic City Books, Tulsa Irish Fest and the Consulate General of Ireland for the first Bloomsday celebration in Tulsa in three years, beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 16, at 101 Archer, 101 E. Archer St.

This year's event will feature an all-you-can-eat Irish brunch, live music by the local Celtic band Cairde na Gael and “James Joyce: A Global Odyssey,” an exhibit on the author’s legacy and TU’s relationship with the Joyce estate, featuring items from the Special Collections of TU's McFarlin Library.
