Patient records system at Ascension St. John back online after cyberattack
Access to digital patient records was restored at Ascension hospitals in Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Maryland and Texas four weeks after the May 8 cyberattack. The electronic health record system at Ascension St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been restored four weeks after a cyberattack that affected the health care system. The company expects full restoration of the system by the end of next week for its hospitals in six of the 14 states affected. Most hospital departments, physician offices, and clinics can now use electronic patient documentation, charting and ordering systems. The cyberattack was discovered on May 8 and left patients with longer wait times and some delays due to the inaccessibility of digital health records. However, the company remains working to restore other systems and continues to work on other systems.

The electronic health record is back online at Ascension St. John Medical Center in midtown Tulsa about four weeks after the health care system was hit with a ransomware attack.
In a statement, Ascension said electronic patient documentation has been restored, allowing most hospital departments, physician offices and clinics to use electronic documentation, charting and ordering systems.
"Patients should see improved efficiencies and wait times," the statement for Oklahoma patients reads. "Our team continues to work tirelessly to restore other ancillary technology systems."
Ascension said the company expects full restoration by the end of next week after the electronic health record was brought back online for its hospitals in six of the 14 states affected.
"Clinicians will be able to access patient records as they did prior to this incident," a statement from Ascension this week reads. "While these are promising developments in our recovery efforts, our investigation into this incident remains ongoing, along with the remediation of additional systems. This is a complex process, and it will still take time to complete."
The cybersecurity incident was first discovered May 8, according to an Ascension statement. Some patients were contacted about the need for procedures to be rescheduled, but hospitals, doctor’s offices and care sites remained operational.
Ambulances had been instructed, for only the first week after the cyberattack, to divert patients to other emergency rooms. Ascension Rx pharmacies were also affected for a short time.
Patients had been warned about “longer than usual wait times and some delays" because of the inaccessibility of digital health records as Ascension worked to get the system back online.
