Free Market Friday: Why nuclear makes sense for Oklahoma
OCPA President Jonathan Small argues an advanced nuclear energy campus could create jobs and investment in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is one of six states being considered to host a Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campus, or NLIC, which could create thousands of new jobs and boost the state's economy for decades. The campus would include small modular reactors, fuel production, recycling, and long-term waste management. Tulsa-based Occlusion Nuclear Solutions estimates the project could create between 10,000 and 15,000 jobs. The Department of Energy estimates that a fully developed campus could attract up to $50 billion in capital investment, support nearly 25,000 job opportunities, and generate as much as $10 billion in state and local tax revenue. A study found there were no technical barriers to nuclear projects in Oklahoma, with experienced oil, gas, aerospace, and precision-manufacturing workers possessing many of the skills required for advanced nuclear development. The project could help solve a decades-long national problem of how to safely manage spent nuclear fuel while safely managing what remains.
