Study: Oklahoma Should Support Tech-Driven Industries

To maintain the momentum of Tulsa’s thriving aerospace industry and other tech-driven industries, the state must do a better job coordinating strategic investments made in innovation, education and other areas. A study commissioned by the Oklahoma Technology Alliance has found that the state of Oklahoma should coordinate strategic investments in innovation, education, entrepreneurship and workforce development to support tech-driven industries like aerospace, energy, ag-tech, healthcare technology, and data centers. The study, which looked at the state's aerospace industry and other tech-based industries, found that these industries have had significant impacts on the state’s economy, contributing about 17% of the total market value of all goods and services produced by labor in 2025. The state currently loses 53% of its science, technology, engineering and math degree holders to out-of-state career opportunities, limited access to investment capital and limited investment capital compared to other states. Shortcomings identified in several key areas include aligning education and workforce programs with industry needs to support the tech sector. The report also highlighted a lack of venture capital and “angel” investment, difficulty recruiting experienced tech talent, bureaucratic university tech transfer processes, and absence of a unified statewide vision for tech growth. The researchers consulted with tech sector executives, educators, economic development professionals, tribal leaders, and other leaders to assess the state.
