Tulsa Zoo celebrates 50 years of continuous AZA accreditation
Tulsa Zoo marks 50 consecutive years of accreditation for meeting animal care, conservation and education standards. Tulsa Zoo has celebrated 50 years of continuous accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a designation it first received in 1976. The zoo was one of the first 11 institutions worldwide to pass the association's voluntary accreditation process, which began in 1974. AZA accreditation assesses zoological institutions on animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation, education and guest experience. Only about 10% of animal exhibitors licensed by the Department of Agriculture achieve AZA. Federal agencies, including the USDA and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, recognize AZA standards as a national benchmark for zoological institution.
